Freedom

The Passport and ‘Freedom’.

Written by Andy

I often say: “Is the passport a symbol of freedom — or a symbol of restriction on travel. You can only travel from country to country if you have a passport issued by your country of origin. Thus your nation controls your ability to move. In a free nation, you may travel ‘freely’ within a country (most of the time), but you need permission in the form of a government issued passport to travel overseas. This may have to be the way it is, but it is not true freedom.
This is a loveable movie expresses the concept well. Charlie Chaplin made it no secret that he was no fan of communism. But he also made it no secret that he no longer recognized America. He discusses freedom with a youngster who happens to be his son.
